Thermoplastic PolyOlefin – a greener choice that will not degrade under UV radiation

TPO are plastic sheets welded together with hot air creating one continuous sheet membrane. The TPO membrane is typically comprised of three layers – a TPO polymer base, a strong, polyester-reinforced fabric center (scrim), and a tough thermoplastic polyolefin compounded top ply. The supplies we, at Better Home & Commercial, will use to repair your roof are some of the best in the commercial roofing industry, especially for structures located in warmer climates. We are confident that they will reduce your energy use and control your cooling costs during our hot Texas summers. Some of our suppliers include Amerus Roofing, who is the leader in the Thermoplastic polyoefin (TPO) roofing material, and Sure-Weld® TPO membranes are ENERGY STAR®-qualified and Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC)-certified.

Commercial Roofing

Things to consider with a TPO roofing system:

Protect your roof and your wallet. A TPO roofing system will greatly reduce your air conditioning consumption. Many manufacturers of TPO membranes are ENERGY STAR-qualified, having met and exceeded the program’s energy efficiency guidelines.

Think of it as sunscreen for your roof. The TPO roofing systems we use are enhanced with OctaGuard XT ™ Weathering Package, a unique eight-component blend of antioxidants, UV absorbers. We guarantee that your roof will withstand the highest temperatures and UV exposures because we will use a membrane that can withstand over 60 days at 275°F.

It is important to keep your roof clean. Our supplies, along with our installation will create a roof that is smooth and designed to resist dirt, debris, mildew and bacteria build-up. That means you will get a cleaner, more solar reflective membrane throughout the life of your roof, and we will back it with an industry-leading reflectivity warranty.

White Roof Coatings

White roof coatings will protect your roof membranes, which will make for a longer life cycle for your roof. They will also reflect solar radiation, which will prevent your structure from absorbing heat and decrease your energy costs. If your roof is asphalt, the sun’s heat and UV rays can cause brittleness, cracks and loss of granules. This can result in roof leaks. If your roof is metal, it may rust and corrode. By coating your roof, you can prevent all of these potential problems and double the life of your roof. Better Home and Commercial can usually coat a roof up to 10 years old. Adding metallic aluminum pigment to a roof coating has many advantages:

1. It adds a cosmetic appeal to your roof.

2. The properties of aluminum are reflective and will protect the asphaltic oils in the base coating. Over 70% of the sun’s rays will be reflected and your roof will not dry out and crack.

3. Since the sun’s rays will not be absorbed by your structure, the indoor temperature can be reduced as much as 15-20 degrees Fahrenheit.

4. The aluminum combined with the asphalt provides a self-protecting roof coating that will result in a longer, low-maintenance roof life. For more info, click here

Pigments provide color to your roof coating by absorbing the sun’s light and then reflecting different parts of the sun’s wavelength, which will then appear to the human eye as color. There are two types of pigments used in roof coatings – organic and inorganic. Organic pigments come in vivid and bright colors and inorganic pigments are opaque and lightfast. To protect against color change from sunlight and the elements, inorganic pigments are used. If your roof is metal, there is a special group of inorganic pigments – Complex Inorganic Color Pigments (CICP) – which are used because of their high IR-reflectivity. For more info, click here

To keep your structure from getting too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter, we suggest a LiquidFoil™ Attic Barrier. LiquidFoil™ Attic Barrier will keep up to 84% of radiant heat from entering or leaving your building. It is easy to apply, dries quickly to a metal finish and will cut energy consumption and costs by 15%. For more info, click here

Cool Roof Rating

Spray Polyurethane Foam roofs have received recognition by The Cool Roof Rating Council, an independent, non-profit organization that determines “coolness” by measuring both solar reflectance and thermal emittance. They refract up to 90% of the suns rays, making it a “Cool Roof”.

If the coating for an SPF roof is properly maintained, then an SPF roof can last a lifetime. Depending on what type and the amount of coating installed, your roof should be services – cleaned, primed and recoated – every ten or fifteen years.

During the hot summer Texas months, heat is absorbed through the roof. An SPF roof system creates a thermal blanket that insulates and shields the roof from the sun’s infrared rays. The roof will not heat up and your air conditioning costs will be lower. In the winter, your heating costs will decrease because the foam keeps the heat inside the building.
